About the Mendocino Coast…
For the last 150 years, the old growth forests
of the Mendocino Coast have been threatened by excessive
logging practices. Today only a few small “virgin” groves
remain and most of the large tracts of land are still held by
corporations, instead of being owned by the public.
yet despite considerable resource depletion,
the Mendocino Coast has retained much of its magnificence.
Proven to be one of the most pristine
remaining ocean habitats in America, its coastal
rivers and forests provide habitat for many
endangered species including
the Coho Salmon, the Spotted Owl, and the Marbled
Murrelet. Current land management and corporate
logging practices continue to deplete the health
of these ecosystems.
